I commend Governor El-Rufai for this Initiative.

The Kids in the Picture above Goes by the Name Abubakar Elrufai, the son oF The Executive Governor of Kaduna State and the Governor deemed it fit to Register the Kid in a Public school within the State.

UNILORIN Speaks On Student Who Withdrew From School Over Religious Belief

Authorities of the University of Ilorin, Kwara State on Sunday said that they had accepted the voluntary withdrawal of a student, Jephtaph Abolarin, from the institution.

Abolarin, a 300-Level Sociology student, had written to the university confessing to cheating during his West African Senior School Certificate Examination.

Abolarin, who claimed he had become a ‘born again’ Christian, said continuing his university education, using an unmerited certificate was unjust and immoral.

He wrote the letter to the institution’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Sidiqat Ijaiya, on August 5, 2016.

According to him, he wanted to withdraw from the school because he got his WASSCE through examination malpractice.

Reacting to the letter on Sunday, the university Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, confirmed the withdrawal of the student.

Akogun, who noted that the Senate of the university had accepted the withdrawal letter, added that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali, commended Abolarin for his repentance and sincerity.

The VC, Akogun added, wished Abolarin well in his future endeavour.

Part of Abolarin’s letter to the DVC read, “Just as a house that was built on a faulty foundation will surely collapse, it is also certain that a career that is built on a faulty foundation will definitely collapse. All through my secondary school days, I was just a church ‘goer’, without genuine salvation and the fear of God. As a result, I got my WASSCE result through examination malpractice.

“By the grace of God, now, I have encountered the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ, which called for repentance and restitution.

“Sir, with deep conviction, I have realised that there is no point building my academic career on a faulty foundation; since the WASSCE result I got through malpractice is the basis in which my admission into this university was anchored.

“Therefore, I have decided to withdraw from the university and start all over again.”

Recession: Lagos Parents Withdraw Kids From Private Schools

Many parents in Lagos State have started withdrawing their children from private to public schools, due to the current economic recession.

SUNDAY PUNCH learnt that many of the parents took the decision when they discovered that their income could no longer meet their needs.

Some proprietors of private schools, who spoke with SUNDAY PUNCH, said they were expecting such situation.

The Deputy President, National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, Mr. Abayomi Otubela, told one of our correspondents that one of his members in Mushin, Lagos State, had formally complained that parents were withdrawing their children in droves, from her school to the public schools in the area.

A mother of three, Mrs. Favour Ukpong, whose child attends a private school at the Fagba area of Lagos, told SUNDAY PUNCH that she had withdrawn her daughter from the school and moved her to a public school.

Ukpong said, “I just realised that I can’t afford the fees any longer. More so, the proprietors have increased the fees from N18,000 to N25,000.

“How much do I make from the second-hand clothes I sell? I don’t make much. Paying N18,000 had even been a challenge for me. I took my time to search for a good public school in my area. I am happy with my choice.”

Another parent, Mrs. Wemimo Abiodun said her child’s tuition had increased by N10, 000, which spurred her decision to withdraw her daughter from a private school at the Ojodu-Berger area of Lagos.

She said, “There are good public schools that have sound teachers. Many parents get carried away with the hype that comes with having a child in a private school.

“I had wanted to withdraw my daughter long time ago. The tuition was N40,000 and has now increased to N50,000. My husband can’t afford that.”

Also, a banker, Mr. Steve Aliyu, who said he was a victim of a mass purge in his organisation recently, said he had withdrawn his four year-old daughter from a private to a public school.

He said, “I took the decision because I was affected by the recent retrenchment exercise in one of the new generation banks, and things have not been easy for me and my family.”

A small scale industrialist, Mr. John Adaeze, also said he decided to take his two children to a public school in his area when he considered the tuition fees and transportation fare to their former private school.

He said, “Business is down and my wife is not working yet. We were paying about N500,000 per term in the former school of our two children. As a matter of fact, I signed an undertaking to pay their fees before they were allowed to write their examinations last term.”

Similarly, a widow, who is a mother of four, in the Ketu area of Lagos, who identified herself as Mrs. Davies, said she decided to withdraw her children from a private school because she could no longer shoulder the responsibility of paying their tuition fees in their former private school alone.

Also, a businessman, Mr. Adebola Ola, said he withdrew his three children to a less expensive private school due to funds paucity.

He said, “I have three children in an international school, but with the current recession in the country, my wife and I agreed and we have moved them to a less expensive private school.”

A school proprietress/principal, Mrs. Uzor Oluwaluyi, said, “I envisaged that due to the harsh economic recession in the country, the possibility of parents moving their kids from private schools to public schools as a new school year beckons is 50/50.”

Another school proprietress, Mrs. Abimbola Oni, expressed fears that rather than taking their kids to public schools, some parents might decide to keep them at home.

She said “You would be amazed that some parents will keep their wards at home, rather than take them to public schools. Recently, three parents with children in my school approached me and told me that they’d be withdrawing their children from our school when school resumes due to lack of funds.”

The Proprietress, Children International School, Lekki, Lagos State, Mrs. Joke Chukwuma, explained that private school operators were aware of the hard times most parents are going through and had decided to make payment of fees, conducive for them.

She said, “We can’t reduce school fees because we don’t want to lower our quality or standard. What we can do is give parents softer payment terms. So, instead of them paying a year in advance, they pay per term. Some can even pay on monthly basis.”

The Senior Staff Association of the Nigerian Universities (SSANU), FUNAAB Chapter has called for the removal of the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olusola Oyewole.

After its emergency meeting held at the premises of the institution, the Union also called for the dissolution of the institution’s Governing Council.

WAEC Result Of The Girl Electrocuted In Lagos After Writing WAEC

“She Wanted To Be A Bio-chemist” – Girl Electrocuted After Writing WAEC Makes 2Bs, 6Cs

Deborah Faleke, the young girl electrocuted at Fagbenro Street, Alakuko, Lagos State on May 21, two weeks after she finished writing her WASCE examination, had two distinctions and six credits in the just-released results.

Pastor Ademola Faleke, her father, disclosed yesterday that Deborah’s result was one of the best in her school.

He said: “Deborah had two distinctions and six credits out of the nine subjects she sat for in the 2016 May/June WASCE: C6, Economics; B3, Geography; C5, Civil Education, and C4 in English Language. “She also had C4 in Mathematics; B3, in Chemistry; E8, Biology; C6, Physics and F9 in Marketing.” ‘

The pastor, moved to tears while reeling out the result, said Deborah had desired to study Bio-Chemistry in one of the private universities in Ogun State before her death.

He said: “My daughter was the Senior Girl and President of the school Jet’s Club and the Secretary of its Literary and Debating Society. “I had promised her that I would do everything within my power to ensure that she achieved her education goals, but the will of God must prevail.”

Deborah had gone to stay with her cousin, Bukola Ogunbanjo, when the incident that led to her untimely death happened.

The high-tension, which belonged to Ikeja Electric, IE, fell on Deborah immediately electricity supply was restored to the area around 10a.m., on the fateful day. According to Faleke, “the management of IE visited my family once. Since then, my family had not seen or heard anything from them.”

He also said that recently the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, sent its representatives to commiserate with him and his family over the loss. However, IE’s Head of Corporate Communications, Mr. Felix Ofulue, said that the matter was being handled by its legal unit.

Only Senate, Academic Boards Of Universities Can Admit - JAMB

THE Registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Ishaq Oyolede, yesterday in Kano, cleared the air on the processes for admissions into tertiary institutions in Nigeria for the 2016 academic year.

He said it is the Senate or Academic Board of each institution that has the prerogative of admitting candidates to their respective institutions, subject only to the existing national policy on admission into tertiary institutions.

Addressing participants at the first Technical Committee meeting on 2016 admissions to first choice institutions at the Bayero University, Kano, he explained that  JAMB’s responsibility was to coordinate the process and not to usurp the traditional responsibilities of the senates and academic boards.

“Consequently, no candidate must emanate from any other source (JAMB inclusive) outside the list prepared and recommended by the institutions,” he stated.

He explained that JAMB has the right to reject candidates for non-compliance with the extant rules and regulations, but has no right to substitute or originate any names without prior concurrence of the institutions.

“The only difference between this year’s admission process and what has always been the practice is the policy that there should be no written post-UTME test. All other processes should be and would be as they have always been,” he said.

He tasked the participants, which included admission officers, registrars, directors and several stakeholders to act with focus on that which would be beneficial to the largest number of Nigerians.

“We must avoid adding to the burden of the masses of our people who rightly yearns for higher education as a veritable means of active participation in public life,” he stated.

He reiterated the fact that the National Policy on Admissions into tertiary institutions in Nigeria remains a 60:40 (Science/Art) ratio for conventional universities, 80:20 Science/Art) ratio for  non-conventional, universities, 70:30 ratio (technology/non-technology) ratio for National Diploma awarding institutions.

Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, in his remarks, applauded the resolution of the controversy surrounding this year’s admission into tertiary Institutions, saying there ought to be a difference between the regulators and implementors.

“You  cannot regulate and implement. The two must not meet else you will be compromised,” Ganduje who was represented by his deputy, Professor Hafiz Abubakar said.

Protest Ongoing In Funaab Over Robbery Incident

its a pity that the FUNAAB everybody knew is gone.. we now have a school in which Robbery case happens almost everyday..
we now have a school in which there is disorderliness among our Excos
we now have a school in which the health centre no longer have enough workers to treat the students
we now have a school in which everything is now being postponed(inaugural, convocation, resumption)
we now have a school in which the academic calendar is no more straight...

what caused this morning protest was because, 2 hostels were robbed over the night(in which this is not the first time of its happening)
Adejoke hostel was robbed with Phones ,laptops and some valuables were carted away with a student seriously injured on his head..
This instigated the protest because this is not the first of its happening in funaab,it has become a regular routine in funaab environment with Robbers/burglers upsetting the peace of the students but the best the school could do is to fold their arms and look...
The road leading to the school has been blocked making it impossible for any vehicle to go in or out of the school..
The student union president popularly known as DENCO addressed the crowd at the protest and stated three things that would be done if at all the student would stop the protest
*NO ACADEMIC activities till a lasting solution is found

* School management should write a letter of commitment to the students off campus to show that they are also property of the school from hence forth

* The commissioner of police Ogun state should be presented at the protest right way .

If any of this three is not put in place the protest would move to the school..
Students are already moving to the main Express road(abk-Ibadan)

SUG Kogi University Blocks Roads Linking East To North

The Students Union Government of Kogi State University and National Association of Nigerians Students, NANS, has blocked major roads in Lokoja metropolis, linking East from Enugu to the North via Abuja, Nassarawa etc, in protest of the 3 months old strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Kogi State Chapter.

As it stands, the Government and ASUU are not shifting grounds and the students who have been under their elephant and grass fight have taken to the streets to air their dissatisfaction with the industrial action.

By- Promise Emmanuel- Live from Lokoja

The Students are in mixed moods of jubilation and frustration as placards and other forms of protest images are swung left, right and about in the ongoing stydents protests at Kogi State capital, Lokoja. Many other students are joining up. Aluta songs are in flaring decibels.

Few minutes ago, The Commissioner of Police, Yakubu Usman. SSG to the Governor, Mrs. Folashade Ayoade and Commissioner for Education J.S Tolorunleke just left the scene of protests as students remained avid in their request of meeting only the state Governor, Yahaya Bello.

We also just got wind of ASUU' delegates being on their way to Lokoja. According to the Student Union Government President' Comrade Philip Omepa, the invitation was to show clearly that Students are not protesting against anybody or taking sides as what they want for both parties to return to negotiation table.

The Public Relations Officer of SUG, Comrade Cosmos Ogiri, lamented the missed signals the protest might be sending, he however assured all watchers that the SUG only wants the school to be settled for academic activities. He said "anybody that would think we haven't been patient for 3 good months doesn't have a conscience. What do we have to do? Just what?!", he lamented.

A student at the site of protest, Enema Ilemona also lent his opinion on the issue, he remarked "This is the first time in my life I think we have an SUG. The fact is that both Government and ASUU have their own facts and points, but what is our own point?", he said.

Another demonstrator said "It's high time Lecturers and Government realise that we are not immovable objects. They've been tossing us up and down to side with them with their persuasive positions. We are tired, we can't side anybody. Government has tried, ASUU too have tried. We only want to resume and graduate", he said.

At the time of filing this report, the demonstration is relatively peaceful as law enforcement agents are also present to monitor the situation. However, nothing has been heard from the Governor as Lokoja goes into flame of different mix of Aluta songs.

Update at 3.42pm:

The State Government, ASUU Representatives and Students Union Excos are currently in a meeting at the Lugard House, Lokoja.

The demonstration is yielding fruits.

With Juju oooo! Workers Chase UNAAB VC in broad day light

Non-Academic staff of the Federal
University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, occupied
the front of the Senate building for the third
straight day to protest against some policies
of the institution.
Our correspondent gathered that the angry
workers chased away the Vice-chancellor,
Prof. Olusola Oyewole, from his office along
with some other academic staff with charms.
The workers, it was gathered began the
protest on Tuesday and have not failed to
gather to protest each day since then.
The workers under the aegis of Joint Action
Committee had vowed never to return to
their duty posts until the school management
yield to their demands, which include
upgrading of staff with additional
qualifications, appointment of substantive
directors to all non-academic teaching staff
units and provision of working tools, among
others.
When our correspondent visited the campus
on Thursday, angry workers were seen in
front of the Senate building waiting for the
directive from the leadership of the unions.
Some of them were seen holding charms,
made with cow horns covered with red
clothes while others entertained themselves
with the music of the late Afrobeat legend,
Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
The NASU Chairman, who’s also the JAC
Chairman, Ishaq Odunjo, told the workers
that a meeting was held with the school
management late Wednesday night where
their demands were discussed.
The Head, Directorate of Public Relations of
the university, Mrs. Emi Alawode, could not

OAU Is On Strike.

The authorities of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife have shut down the institution indefinitely over continuous protests by some of its workers.

The Registrar of the university, Dotun Awoyemo confirmed this to our correspondent on the telephone on Tuesday.

According to him, the management has decided to shut down the university for the safety of students and staff.

He said, "We have shut down the university indefinitely pending the time that we will resolve issues with our workers - Non-academic Staff of University (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (SSANU).

"We have asked our newly admitted students to go home and postponed the resumption of old students indefinitely."

It was gathered that old students of the OAU were expected to resume next week after a two-month break.

Recall that workers of the OAU under the aegis of NASU and SSANU have intensified their protest against non-payment of allowances and alleged imposition of a Vice-Chancellor despite the 'no work', 'no pay' threat by the university's authorities.

They vowed to stop the newly appointed VC from resuming office on Friday.

Our correspondent gathered that the protest intensified when the University's Governing Council announced Prof. Ayobami Salam as the new VC.

Though the counsel to the university denied the appointment of a new VC at the Osogbo Federal High Court hearing last Friday afternoon, the Governing Council on Saturday officially announced Salami.
