Staff Union Call For Removal Of FUNAAB VC

The Senior Staff Association of the Nigerian Universities (SSANU), FUNAAB Chapter has called for the removal of the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olusola Oyewole.

The Union is calling for the removal due to alleged high handedness, betrayal of public trust among others

After its emergency meeting held at the premises of the institution, the Union also called for the dissolution of the institution’s Governing Council.

The Executive Committee of the Union, under the Chairmanship of Rotimi Fasunwon, had called the emergency congress to take a position on three members of the association, who were allegedly suspended by the Vice Chancellor.

Prof Oyewole was said to have, in a letter issued and signed by him, which was read to the congress by Mr Fasunwon, had accused three members of the union of an alleged acts prejudicial to the smooth running and governance of the university “.

Effort to get the reaction of the Director of Public Relations of the institution, Mrs Emmy Alawode, proved abortive as she said on phone that she is “not ready to say anything about the development”.

WAEC Result Of The Girl Electrocuted In Lagos After Writing WAEC

“She Wanted To Be A Bio-chemist” – Girl Electrocuted After Writing WAEC Makes 2Bs, 6Cs

Deborah Faleke, the young girl electrocuted at Fagbenro Street, Alakuko, Lagos State on May 21, two weeks after she finished writing her WASCE examination, had two distinctions and six credits in the just-released results.

Pastor Ademola Faleke, her father, disclosed yesterday that Deborah’s result was one of the best in her school.

He said: “Deborah had two distinctions and six credits out of the nine subjects she sat for in the 2016 May/June WASCE: C6, Economics; B3, Geography; C5, Civil Education, and C4 in English Language. “She also had C4 in Mathematics; B3, in Chemistry; E8, Biology; C6, Physics and F9 in Marketing.” ‘

The pastor, moved to tears while reeling out the result, said Deborah had desired to study Bio-Chemistry in one of the private universities in Ogun State before her death.

He said: “My daughter was the Senior Girl and President of the school Jet’s Club and the Secretary of its Literary and Debating Society. “I had promised her that I would do everything within my power to ensure that she achieved her education goals, but the will of God must prevail.”

Deborah had gone to stay with her cousin, Bukola Ogunbanjo, when the incident that led to her untimely death happened.

The high-tension, which belonged to Ikeja Electric, IE, fell on Deborah immediately electricity supply was restored to the area around 10a.m., on the fateful day. According to Faleke, “the management of IE visited my family once. Since then, my family had not seen or heard anything from them.”

He also said that recently the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, sent its representatives to commiserate with him and his family over the loss. However, IE’s Head of Corporate Communications, Mr. Felix Ofulue, said that the matter was being handled by its legal unit.

Only Senate, Academic Boards Of Universities Can Admit - JAMB

THE Registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Ishaq Oyolede, yesterday in Kano, cleared the air on the processes for admissions into tertiary institutions in Nigeria for the 2016 academic year.

He said it is the Senate or Academic Board of each institution that has the prerogative of admitting candidates to their respective institutions, subject only to the existing national policy on admission into tertiary institutions.

Addressing participants at the first Technical Committee meeting on 2016 admissions to first choice institutions at the Bayero University, Kano, he explained that  JAMB’s responsibility was to coordinate the process and not to usurp the traditional responsibilities of the senates and academic boards.

“Consequently, no candidate must emanate from any other source (JAMB inclusive) outside the list prepared and recommended by the institutions,” he stated.

He explained that JAMB has the right to reject candidates for non-compliance with the extant rules and regulations, but has no right to substitute or originate any names without prior concurrence of the institutions.

“The only difference between this year’s admission process and what has always been the practice is the policy that there should be no written post-UTME test. All other processes should be and would be as they have always been,” he said.

He tasked the participants, which included admission officers, registrars, directors and several stakeholders to act with focus on that which would be beneficial to the largest number of Nigerians.

“We must avoid adding to the burden of the masses of our people who rightly yearns for higher education as a veritable means of active participation in public life,” he stated.

He reiterated the fact that the National Policy on Admissions into tertiary institutions in Nigeria remains a 60:40 (Science/Art) ratio for conventional universities, 80:20 Science/Art) ratio for  non-conventional, universities, 70:30 ratio (technology/non-technology) ratio for National Diploma awarding institutions.

Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, in his remarks, applauded the resolution of the controversy surrounding this year’s admission into tertiary Institutions, saying there ought to be a difference between the regulators and implementors.

“You  cannot regulate and implement. The two must not meet else you will be compromised,” Ganduje who was represented by his deputy, Professor Hafiz Abubakar said.

Protest Ongoing In Funaab Over Robbery Incident

its a pity that the FUNAAB everybody knew is gone.. we now have a school in which Robbery case happens almost everyday..
we now have a school in which there is disorderliness among our Excos
we now have a school in which the health centre no longer have enough workers to treat the students
we now have a school in which everything is now being postponed(inaugural, convocation, resumption)
we now have a school in which the academic calendar is no more straight...

what caused this morning protest was because, 2 hostels were robbed over the night(in which this is not the first time of its happening)
Adejoke hostel was robbed with Phones ,laptops and some valuables were carted away with a student seriously injured on his head..
This instigated the protest because this is not the first of its happening in funaab,it has become a regular routine in funaab environment with Robbers/burglers upsetting the peace of the students but the best the school could do is to fold their arms and look...
The road leading to the school has been blocked making it impossible for any vehicle to go in or out of the school..
The student union president popularly known as DENCO addressed the crowd at the protest and stated three things that would be done if at all the student would stop the protest
*NO ACADEMIC activities till a lasting solution is found

* School management should write a letter of commitment to the students off campus to show that they are also property of the school from hence forth

* The commissioner of police Ogun state should be presented at the protest right way .

If any of this three is not put in place the protest would move to the school..
Students are already moving to the main Express road(abk-Ibadan)
